Biographical or Historical Data
The Newton Times was a prize-winning, liberal weekly newspaper which published in Newton, Massachusetts from 1971 to 1980. It was an alternative voice created by anti-war activists who weren't content with coverage of the issues by local newspapers. It served as a force in the community as it reported on social issues, analyzed city and public school budgets, assessed and endorsed political candidates and published a voters' guide before each election. It pushed for removal of asbestos in Newton North High School and raised awareness of Newton's distinctive neighborhoods. It was forced to close because of reduced advertising revenue taken by competing weeklies. The Newton Free Library has the Newton Times on microfilm (v. 1, #1, Sept. 8, 1971-v. 9, #22, Jan. 23, 1980), as well as 51 boxes of photographs from the newspaper's archive and a collection of mock-up maps used with articles. Collection includes views predominantly of Nonantum and Oak Hill, but also of Newtonville, Newton Corner, West Newton and Newton Highlands. Nonantum is shown as a vibrant neighborhood - its residents, shop owners, block parties, fairs, festas, Christmas parties, clambakes, its religious institutions: the synagogue on Adams Street, Our Lady Help of Christians Church, its associations: American Legion Post 440, Boy's Club, Venerable Sons of Italy, Nonantum Multi-Service Center, its schools: Carr School, Newton Catholic High School, Garden City Activity Center. Includes one of the last photographs of Silver Lake as a derelict pond bordering a parking lot. One photograph of storefront of John W. Murphy's grocery in 1918 in Nonantum, two men standing at entrance. Collection includes various views of other Newton villages - post office workers, Ball House at 33 Waban St. in Newton Corner, Memorial School, Lincoln-Eliot School, Mt. Ida College, All Newton Music School, Mayor's Prayer Breakfast of 1978.
