Description
Mr. Conneely was born in Ireland and immigrated in 1953 at the age of 21. He first worked on a fishing trawler with his father at the age of 10, and spent his young adulthood as a merchant mariner. In the Boston area he operated a commercial fishing vessel and worked ashore in facilities management and boat repair. He describes experiences at sea, and the conflict in Ireland from his perspective as a Roman Catholic. He praises the beauty of Newton and the education his children received there. The joys and sorrows of his life in the United States include strong friendship, struggles with alcoholism, the deaths of his wife and a grandchild, and the comfort of writing and sharing poetry.
